The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has directed all affiliated schools to promptly implement skill education initiatives, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE). These initiatives aim to integrate vocational skills into the school curriculum, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world applications.

Key Initiatives for Skill Education:

  1. Skill Modules for Classes 6-8
CBSE has introduced various skill modules for middle school students, each lasting 12-15 hours. These modules cover topics like Artificial Intelligence, Financial Literacy, Handicrafts, and more. Schools can offer these modules during regular classes, hobby clubs, or through self-learning online platforms. The study materials are activity-based and available on the CBSE academic website.
  2. Skill Subjects in Classes 9-12
A range of 22 skill subjects for classes 9-10 and 43 skill subjects for classes 11-12 are available. Schools do not require separate permission or fees to introduce these subjects. The subjects are mapped to the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) levels, ensuring a clear pathway for students in various job roles. Students are advised not to change skill subjects in classes 10 and 12 to maintain consistency. More details can be found on the CBSE circular.
  3. Composite Skill Labs
Schools are encouraged to establish Composite Skill Labs by 2026, equipped with necessary tools to facilitate skill education. Detailed guidelines on setting up these labs will be provided by CBSE. For updates, visit the CBSE guidelines.
  4. District Skill Coordinators (DSCs)
CBSE is appointing DSCs across districts to ensure the smooth implementation of these initiatives at the grassroots level. These coordinators will provide support and monitor the progress of skill education in schools.
  5. Awareness and Capacity Building
Regular programs are being organized for principals and teachers, including collaborations with industry experts. All skill education programs are free and recognized for Continuous Professional Development (CPD). CBSE has signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with various institutes to promote skill education, assessment, and capacity building of teachers. Learn more about the MoUs.
  6. Skill Expos and Career Guidance
CBSE organizes events such as hackathons, ideathons, and skill expos to provide students with experiential learning opportunities. A ‘Compendium of Careers and Education Pathways’ has been prepared to guide students pursuing skill subjects in Class 12, available on the CBSE website.
  7. Access to Resources
Textbooks, sample question papers, and other materials for skill subjects are available on the CBSE Academic website. Schools are encouraged to utilize these resources to effectively implement skill education initiatives. Visit the resources on the CBSE Academic website.

CBSE emphasizes the importance of these initiatives in preparing students for a rapidly changing workforce and promoting a skilled, self-reliant generation for India’s future growth. Schools are encouraged to share feedback, success stories of alumni, and suggestions to further enhance the implementation of skill education.
